Ayurveda Pura London Spa Review

I spent a fantastic morning at Ayurveda Pura London, a spa, cafe and training centre that has won multiple awards for their beauty products, their spa and their academy.  It also has a yoga centre where you can take classes.

I only had one treatment, (one of the best full body massages I have ever had – more on this later) but I can tell you this: I am hooked and will be back for more! And not only that, I am going to embrace more Ayurveda principles in my life.

I’m so impressed with Ayurveda Pura, that its hard for me to know where to begin to tell you all the reasons why.

Found right near North Greenwhich tube station in  London (situated not too far from the O2 entertainment building) this spa is really a centre with so much to offer people in terms of treatments, health advice and supplements.

I have known a little bit about Ayurvedic medicine ever since starting my health journey, but I hadn’t really ever experienced it or truly understood the concept.  Now after just spending the morning there, I had a bit of an epiphany and now I really ‘get it’.  I think its probably one of the best forms of treatments, prevention and holistic lifestyles that is found on the planet.  It’s because one of the most impressive facts about Ayurveda is that its been around for about 5000 years.  With modern medicine only really being so ‘popular’ for the last 100 years – and we sadly have facts and scary statistics and a western world full of fat, sick, unhappy people (including children!) that we know its not really helping people like it should be as people just aren’t getting better and leading a vibrant, great life.  This is why loads of people like me, are wanting to look into proven forms of prevention that have been used by millions of people over a very long time.  That just makes sense to me: we must look for advice from a system that has been used for a very long time and works on prevention!

What Does Ayurveda mean?

Ayurveda means ‘Science Of Life‘ and that alone, interests me because that meaning, tells me that lots of research (with years and years of experience!) has been done into what makes a healthy and happy human being.

Ayuervada – A Truly Holistic Approach

Ayurveda follows a holistic approach, and is known a a ‘complete way of life’ It focuses on prevention and is free from harmful side effects and looks to treat the root cause of disease rather than just the symptoms.  Again, modern medicine does not do this and just tries to treat the symptoms and does not look at the entire person, their spiritual being and their lifestyle. And this makes people lifelong customers of the pharmaceutical companies and may well send them off to an early grave. Not a nice thought I know, but its the truth.

Principles of Ayurveda

Ayurveda sees everything in the Universe, including human beings, as composed of five basic elements (known as Panchamahabhutas) which are split up into: space, air, fire, water and earth.  These five elements in turn combine with each other to give rise to three bio-physical forces (otherwise known as the ‘doshas’).  These are Vata (air and space), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).

Every person has with them all of these three biophysical forces, but you can figure out someones dosha by the dominance of one or two of the doshas. This will then make up someone’s ‘constitution.’

Before you have a treatment at Ayurveda Pura, you will be given a brief consultation to figure out your doshas.  I was lucky to have a quick consolation with Dr Deepa Apte, the strikingly gorgeous founder of Ayurveda Pura and also creator of an certified organic skincare range of beauty products  named ‘holistic essentials’  which  has been designed with the individual doshas in mind.  Dr Apte asked me a few questions about my sleeping patterns, my diet, my stress levels and also felt my pulse and looked at my tongue.  She was able to figure out I was a combination of Vata & Pitta.  If you’d like to find out what you would be please take this short quiz.

Basically I am prone to having sleep disturbance and digestive issues and suffer from a poor nervous system.  So my massage was tailored to calm and soothe my body (and mind!) instead of being energising. It involved lots of long strokes up and down the body in a ‘figure of 8 movement’.  It was without a doubt one of the best massages I have ever had. I couldn’t believe how alert I felt afterwards, relaxed yes, but not the typical super groggy feeling I get from other massages which, looking back, were probably just not really right for my body type.

Ive been lucky to visit a lot of spas over the years, in different countries, and I realised yesterday that Ayurveda Pura was the only clinic I have ever visited where the treatments are tailored to the individual and really work on making the health of the entire person much better. Massage in general is yes, always great for people more so than not having one, but I now know that there are much more effective ways to have them! You want a therapist to work with your body type and condition and problems, and do things differently for you, rather than give the same standard massage to everyone else.

My therapist Colette was fantastic too, so if you do book in with Ayurveda Pura, ask for her! All the other staff seemed lovely too though! I was incredibly impressed when I asked Colette what she had studied, not expecting her answer of ‘three years of ayurvedic medicine with Dr Apte, as well as spending 6 months in India learning alongside Ayurvedic teachers’ Um. WOW! When do you visit a spa that has staff trained like that? Basically Colette is almost an Ayurvedic Doctor! She was incredibly lovely and you could tell she really loved her job – you felt like you were in great hands.

The Principles of Ayurvedic Treatment

When you follow Ayurvedic principles you will do the following:

Take specific herbs that will help your dosha to become more balanced.

Have special massages using herb infused massage oils

Follow nutritional advice tailored to your constitution.

Follow advice on lifestyle habits

Do specially selected Yoga Exercises

Yoga is a very big part of Ayurveda as well, which really works on the entire body as well as the mind and spiritual body.

Treatments offered at Ayurveda Pura

The treatments offered are very extensive and range from face and head treatments, full body treatments, weight loss, de-stress, re-fresh, re-energise, anti-ageing, rejuvenation and there are also packages for brides, supreme pamper packages and their impressive ‘Panchakarma’ package which is a 9 day Ayurvedic detoxification package where you visit for 9 days and have two treatments a day. Thats 18 face and body treatments in just over a week. Heavenly!  One day (in fact I am going to tell my hubby if he wants us to have another baby, he needs to entice me with this package so I can prepare for it all!)

Lots of the treatments involve stimulation of the ‘mama’ points which is the Ayurvedic equivalent of acupressure points. I have already a few more treatments in mind for my next visit. I want to try a facial and their ‘heart’ treatment which is called ‘ Hridaya Basti’ this is known to bring a profound sense of love and peace as it helps to relieve nervousness, anxiety and fear.

Holistic Essentials Skincare

Not only has Dr Apte, started this huge clinic, and training academy, she’s also created a very impressive range of hair, face and beauty products called Holistic Essentials. I’d actually been sent some of the skincare previously over the years and loved testing it out. A little bit of each product always goes a very long way, and the scents are D-I-V-I-N-E  – honestly you just immediately drift off to another place breathing them in. You can tell these products have been formulated with some pretty incredible ingredients – not just to make it smell nice but to actually work in the skin. Dr Aptes motto and indeed one that encapsulates Ayurvedic skincare is that ‘you should only put on your skin what you could put on your tongue’.  I’m totally with her on that one!

All of the Holistic Essentials products are:

  • 100% Pure Natural Ingredients
  • Handmade in the UK
  • Free of SLS
  • Free of Artificial Perfume
  • Free of Parabens & Petrochemicals
  • Free of Animal Products
  • Free of Animal Testing
  • Faithful to Ayurveda, the 5000 year old Indian holistic approach to health and beauty

I was sent home with their oh so gorgeous Skin-radiance Exfoliating cream and their Daily Replenish Cream – their ‘re-fresh’ formula which is for a normal/sensitive skin.  I’m shocked at the low price of this fantastic range – their moisturisers cost only approx £10.79. I don’t know of another range that is that low price, but contains such high quality organic ingredients that really do wonders for the skin.  I will be purchasing more when I run out thats for sure. My skin already feels and looks much better after using the products last night and this morning.

Ayurveda Pura Specialty Made Supplements, Teas and Herbs

There’s even more to tell you about this fantastic company. I’ve left part of the most impressive aspect till last.  Right near reception desk is a display of Ayurvedic skincare, organic teas and other speciality made supplements. Colette showed me their award winning ‘Chyawaynprash’ which has left me already a massive fan because its probably one of the best food based supplements that you can buy.  This product is a jam like consistency that you eat from a spoon, put on your porridge or cereal, or even add to warm water as a lovely soothing drink. It looks like a molasses (but tastes SO much better) and contains a whole mixture of herbs, spices and the amazing ‘indian goose bury’ which is high in Vitamin C.

Our Luxury Chyawanprash is a pure and natural Ayurvedic rejuvenative health tonic and a natural antidote to the stresses of modern life, which is carefully made using a special selection of as many as 47 high quality, natural ingredients such as fruits, herbs and spices, including Amla (Indian Gooseberry), one of the most potent sources of Vitamin C.  We believe that Ayurveda Pura’s Luxury Chyawanprash is the purest, finest quality and tastiest Chyawanprash in the world. Just one spoonful and you will be convinced how good it is. You can taste the difference!

Chyawanprash has been used for thousands of years to revitalise the mind and body.

Ayurveda Pura’s Chyawanprash is a “must-have” food supplement that is not only good for you, but tastes great too! It is prepared in accordance with a special Ayurvedic formulation in a process lasting several days, so that its beneficial effects are maximised.  For maximum benefit take 1-2 teaspoons of this sweet, tangy jam twice a day. You can eat Chyawanprash straight from the spoon, spread it on toast, add it to your favourite herbal tea or mix it with warm milk to make a deliciously tasty drink.

I was given this product to take home and have only now just seen the price. I am totally shocked. Its not around £39.00 like I thought it would be (its a huge jar!) but instead, it is only £11.95. I almost can’t believe it.  Its so amazing that kids absolutely love it too as its like a sweet slightly spicy jam. I find it hard to give my daughter supplements sometimes because if they don’t taste good, she just won’t have them and I don’t want to force anything down her throat. Knowing this is so high in vitamin c, antioxidants and nutrients means that I can give it to lola every day and even have more than enough for myself to have every day too.  If she or I, starts to come down with something then we can have a warm drink with a teaspoon of this stirred in. Seriously you gotta go buy some now! If you find it hard to afford decent supplements, then this is the one for you to try. It works on digestion, immune system and is an overall health product – its really something every person could benefit from.  And its so inexpensive. I’m still in shock about that!

Ayurveda Pura Teas

Dr Apte has also developed her own Tea range and I can tell you that they taste totally amazing too! I purchased the De-stress tea bags (the teas also come in loose tea) and I have been having them at night and first thing in the morning. Delicious! The destress tea contains fennel, cinnamon, cardamon, cloves, orange peel, and ginger. What a fantastic concoction! As you can see from the image above, there are 5 teas to choose from. If you are stumped as to what to choose you can purchase them all in this lovely set.  Each of the jars cost £6.95.

The last item I want to tell you about, which is also worth raving about is their Ghee, which is a ‘clarified butter’ think, the richest, thickest most golden butter you have ever seen in your life, and one that smells absolutely divine.  When I smell it, I think of toffee! It has the sweet, almost caramel scent and tastes divine!! Ayurveda has always been singing the praises of butter, unlike the mainstream health authorities that lied to us for years saying that margarine was good and butter was bad. Now we are hearing its the opposite – finally! But the wise Indians have always know what Butter can do for health.  Here are 15 amazing ways that Ghee can benefit you. Ghee can be used as you would butter, and I am looking forward to putting some over our steamed veggies. I know my little girl Lola will absolutely love this too.

As you can tell, I am incredibly impressed by everything that Ayurveda Pura have to offer people. I don’t normally say this but I will definitely be back, for further treatments, to purchase their skincare and to also continue taking the amazing Chyawanprash jam and to buy the amazing Ghee. Oh and I want to continue drinking the teas too as well as trying some of their other products I haven’t even experienced yet.

The spa is great because you can receive the pampering you are after ( I am yet to mention the gorgeous treatment rooms,  with their wood features, candlelit lighting, rich red colours and the amazing massage tables that were so comfortable – the widest I have even seen- and the gorgeous dark marble tiles in the bathrooms!) but also find out what areas of your health you need to work on and receive advice on how to go about that.

I’m also very much amazed by Dr Apte, how she was able to come up with all of this and that she still manages to be a great mother to her son. Id love to sit down with her and ask her how she thought of all of this, and was able to bring her visions to fruition. Knowing how focused she is yet still manages to maintain a very balanced life (I was given a magazine clipping about how Dr Apte spends her days and despite her busy days at the spa and academy, she still wakes up early to perform her daily ayurvadic rituals as well as does certain things before bed) its made me think if living a life of Ayurvedic principles and it brings a person to do all of these amazing things, then I think YES, this lifestyle truly is holistic and life changing!

I’m booking in again with a girlfriend soon to have a day out in London, our first stop will be Ayurveda Pura London for a treatment (or two!) then a lovely Ayurvedic lunch at the cafe afterwards!
