Unveiling School of Life: A Tranquil Immersion Into Holistic Lifestyle At Spa Village Resort Tembok, Bali
As people turn towards a more mindful existence in terms of health, personal wellbeing and consumption, the School of Life programme helps initiate a healthier lifestyle change in a gentle and unintimidating natural environment. The programme’s before, during and after care activities induct each participant into a supportive community of like-minded individuals.
Each experience is tailor-made to the individual, and begins even before embarking on the journey, when guests fill in the personal questionnaire. This helps School of Life facilitators Sharron Hopley and Samuel Rogalasky assess each individual’s constitution, then a personalised itinerary is crafted according to the guest’s goals and needs.
The experience continues upon arrival to Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, when the resort’s private car awaits guests’ arrival. Stepping into the car and changing into the comfortable spa slippers, then partaking in the refreshing local fruit salad, the unwinding is almost instantaneous.
Each journey to the resort, whether wending through the central mountains past Ubud or along the northeast coast along charming towns such as Candi Dasa, is treated as a half-day tour of the island. Guests are encouraged to immerse themselves in the spirituality and creativity of the island, pausing at their leisure to visit ancient temples, rice paddy terraces and even coffee plantations.
School of Life Experiences
After the scenic half day tour through Bali, arrival at Spa Village Resort Tembok is greeted with a refreshing welcome ritual; then the initial School of Life consultation is conducted, taking each participant through their itinerary to prepare them to officially start School of Life on the full day following arrival. Through these following three, five and seven day sessions, guests experience a daily schedule of Movement and Awareness Practices, Wellness Workshops, Spa Treatments, Creativity Classes, Cooking Classes and specially crafted meals.
A typical day for School of Life might begin with watching the sun rise as the mist clears on the volcanic sand beach, then continuing into a Five Element Form class -an energising exercise which combines movements from vinyasa yoga, tai chi and qiqong. Breakfast follows, then leisure time to laze by the pool, snorkel in the pristine ocean or nap, before the optional Creativity Session. A spa session caps off the morning. Lunch may consist of a summery gazpacho, followed by grilled local mackerel with sauteed vegetables and a coconut-chilli emulsion.
As the sun creeps across the sky, participants may choose to paint in the seafacing gardens by the sea, or join the daily hatha yoga class in the Yoga Shala. Dinner is enjoyed early, before retiring to their rooms for a hot detoxifying bath, prepared with a pot of calming herbal tea on the side.
Healthy and sustainable cuisine practices are a big focus of the School of Life programme and Executive Chef Martin Buchele crafts Wantilan Restaurant’s menus with School of Life highlights. ‘Raw’, ‘fresh’, ‘wholefoods’, ‘locally-sourced’ and ‘delicious’ are keywords which pepper his philosophy and this is displayed in the abundance of tropical fruit platters and creative use of local seafood, vegetables and poultry.
Along with laying a foundation that ‘eating healthy can also mean easy and delicious,’ Chef Martin further strengthens this by taking guests on market visits and offering cooking classes which allow guests to take home easy, sustainable lessons.
Prior to departure from the resort, each participant goes through a quick School of Life closure session which helps summarise the experience and plan their path to renewal. Guests come away not just relaxed and rejuvenated from their retreat, but also with holistic skills which they can practice long-term. A ‘survival’ kit to help them get through their first few days post School of Life is provided, as well as a SOL Sustenance guide and introduction to the SOL Community. This opens the door to continued practice amongst the community, sharing tips, information and support.
Whether in a group, as a couple or single, School of Life offers not just respite from the challenges of modern life, but also an opportunity to step back, self-reflect and learn how to approach life differently. The balanced itinerary provides an opportunity for pure relaxation achieved through a focused regard to meals, exercise and creative expression.
Prices begin at USD300++ per room per night for the five-day, four-night School of Life retreat, based on double occupancy, encompassing accommodation and an integrated daily schedule of meals, activities and spa as well as return airport transfers.
