Spotlight Series: Auricular Acupuncture – A Powerful Defence for Seasonal Allergies
Allergies, are by definition, hypersensitivities to a foreign protein (allergens) – in response our body produces antibodies to fight off these invaders, however, our defence mechanisms overreact, releasing an abundance of histamine which causes often, debilitating irritation and swelling of mucous membranes.
Many of my family, friends and clients suffer with allergies, each year I note more and more people are experiencing seasonal allergy symptoms for the first time – why are more people becoming susceptible to the dark side of pollen?
The incidence of allergies is much higher in cities as compared to rural areas – this is caused by exhaust fumes priming the immune system to react. During the summer, the air in cities contains more free radicals due to the action of sunlight on oxygen molecules
My hayfever has been the most severe this year, than any I can recall, forcing me to take chemical based medicines. Taking such high levels of antihistamines without supporting my nervous system, triggered nerve damage in the form of Shingles, resulting in a few weeks in bed.
This experience motivated me to discover effective holistic treatments and remedies to lessen the misery causes by allergies. Western medicine has as yet, failed to produce chemical cures, that do not ravage both the nervous and immune system and impair psychomotor skills. Moreover, as the body works to detoxify the chemicals, through the organs of elimination, the end result is congested, dull skin, and angry spots. It seems clear that traditional antihistamines simply suppress the symptoms and do not deal with the underlying cause of the allergies. The cause for everyone will differ – it may be embedded in physical or emotional issues. Mine results from an immune system that was subjected to an excess of antibiotics when I was a young child.
I first experienced Auricular Accunpuncture at the Green Fair in Regents Park this year. Donna Machela of The Healing Needles, offered me a treatment as she could see I was a physical mess, as a result of the pollens blowing around fused with the emissions from the arterial routes that surround the park. My skin was inflamed, my eyes swollen, I could not breathe and sneezed perpetually. This is never a good look for a natural skincare practitioner!
Auricular Acupuncture is founded upon the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture that believes that pain and disease can be alleviated by needling acupuncture points that correspond with specific parts of the body. There are over 200 acupuncture points on the ear, each point named after an area of our anatomy. The outer ear acts like a switchboard to the brain. Each acupuncture point triggers electrical impulses from the ear via the brain, to the specific part of the body being treated.
I was nervous about having needles stuck in my ears, Donna was calm and reassuring making me feel safe, and a little braver. She put me on the Allergy Protocol and of the 5 needles she stuck in each ear, it was only the one in my adrenal gland that caused me any discomfort. The Allergy protocol uses points that relate to the release of histamine and the regulation of the adrenal glands to relieve fever, inflammation and swelling. I was asked to sit still, and rest for 30 minutes to allow the new, unobstructed flow of energy to work its magic. Within 10 minutes, I could breathe again through my nose and felt less inclined to scratch my eyes out. After an hour, I felt like a new person, able to physically and emotionally cope with the job at hand.
Fast forward a month, Donna has been treating me once a week and the results are nothing short of miraculous – last weekend I spent two days on a Lavender farm and did not even sneeze. In conjunction, I am supporting myself through nutrition and ensuring I get enough rest.
