The US President has taken the signal of Dr. Manmohan Singh with due importance and possibly because of this reason the Assistant Secretary of States Ms. Nisha Desai is visiting Bangladesh on 16th November. During this visit, the Indian-born US Assistant Secretary of States will meet Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the Opposition Khaleda Zia and try to convince the leader of the opposition in participating in the upcoming general election in Bangladesh for the sake of continuing the democratic process and saving the country from slipping into grips of Islamists and jihadists.
Although political analysts comment that the statement of Dr. Manmohan Singh is actually aimed at alerting the US administration in becoming active partner of Indian National Congress in Stopping Bharatiya Janata Party and Narendra Modi coming into power in New Delhi as well as Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Khaleda Zia in coming into power in Dhaka during the upcoming general elections scheduled to be held in January 2014. It may be mentioned here that, according to public opinion published in Dhaka’s most influential English newspaper The Daily Star and vernacular daily Prothom Alo, the ruling Bangladesh Awami League led coalition government of leftists and Islamists are going to face tremendous defeat in the next election if the poll takes place in free and fair way.
Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is alerting the nation to refrain from voting Bangladesh Nationalist Party led coalition into power in order to save the country from being turned into a Taliban State. For past several years, the jihadist forces in Bangladesh have turned extremely active while provocation of jihad is given to people by the 84,000 koranic madrassas as well as radical Islamist groups like Hizbut Tahrir, Jamaat-E-Islami, Hefazat-E-Islam etc. Hefazat-E-Islam has been demanding implementing Sharia Law in Bangladesh and with such agenda; the group was scheduled holding a “Grand Rally” in Dhaka on 15th November. According to various sources, a large number of jihadists and commandoes from Afghanistan and Palestine are already associated with Hefaazat-E-Islam. Bangladeshi law minister Barrister Shafiq Ahmed had already endorsed the fact that Talibans have entered into Bangladesh.
But the most disturbing news is about Islamists and jihadists inside Bangladesh Army in recent days have become aggressively active and are extending secret cooperation to jihadist forces. InfoTech advisor to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sajeeb Wajed Joy in an important research work at Harvard University journal forecasted that a large segment of the members of Bangladesh Army are having Islamist and jihadist mentality as many of them are from either madrassa education background or are connected with Hizbut Tahrir and Jamaat-E-Islami. Sajeeb Wajed Joy alerted that such huge segment of Islamists inside Bangladesh Army will make attempt of turning the country into a Taliban State.
The prophecy of Sajeeb Wajed Joy of Bangladesh Army being poisoned by Islamists and Jihadists have become crystal clear in a recent phenomenon when the most active intelligence wing of Bangladesh Army became very active in prosecuting anti-jihadist Bangladeshi journalist Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury who faces sedition, treason and blasphemy charges for writing against jihad; for exposing rise of Islamist militancy within the Koranic madrassas; for promoting inter-faith harmony and for advocating relations between Bangladesh and Israel.
Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury achieved international esteem for his courageous stand and in 2006; the US Congress passed a bi-partisan bill (HR-64) in favor of Choudhury and demanded immediate dropping of these false charges. But, Bangladeshi government has been totally ignoring such demand of the US Congress. On 7th November, Choudhury was brought into the court to face the trial, which will end soon. One of the Public Prosecutors in the court told Choudhury’s lawyer that DGFI (Directorate General of Forces Intelligence) are putting strong pressure on the court to anyhow convict Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury in the case.
It may be mentioned here that, Choudhury was the only prisoner who was brought into the court on 27th October during general strike of the opposition, while prison authorities did not send any other prisoner but Shoaib Choudhury to the Court at the pressure of DGFI. The next date of trial of Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury was on 12th November and this time again he’s sent to the court alone as on this day the opposition has called general strike. There is no reply from the prison authorities or the court as to why Choudhury is sent to court from the prison while others aren’t defying the issue of the risk of his life. It is also not understandable as to why Bangladeshi DGFI has become such active in convicting the anti-jihadist journalist.
There is no doubt that Islamists and jihadists inside Bangladesh Army and DGFI have turned active against Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury and these forces are putting undue pressure on the Metropolitan Session Judge in Dhaka in convicting Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury. But the top policy makers in Bangladesh should know, if Choudhury is convicted, it will be a victory of the Islamists and Jihadists. The US government, the Indian government, the United Nations and the world need to immediately look into this crucial issue.
